Long before it welcomed hotel guests, the building housed Lefkara’s market. It had stood abandoned for years when one of The Agora’s founders came across it while cycling through the village. Looking through a window, he noticed the courtyard and began to imagine a hotel there.
The building’s history influenced the name Agora. “Agora” means market in Greek, and its etymological roots can also be traced back to a “gathering place.” That was the kind of hotel the founders wanted to create.
The owners wanted to create somewhere they would enjoy staying themselves, with shared spaces where guests could spend time together.

Inside, on the now-refurnished walls, guests can find articles from the founders’ travels and their time living abroad. The study takes inspiration from an English library, while the bar draws on New York jazz venues. Vintage pieces sit alongside furniture made in Cyprus, with different rooms and communal spaces following distinct design influences.

The founders also describe choosing an adults-only format to suit the hotel’s small scale and the quieter atmosphere they wanted to create.
The Readers’ Choice Awards assess properties through an online survey. Voting for the 2026 UK edition ran from 1 April to 30 June, with respondents rating hotels against criteria relevant to their category.
Those assessments use a five-point scale, ranging from poor to excellent, which Condé Nast converts into percentage scores. The average ratings determine each property’s final score, published to two decimal places. Candidates must receive a minimum number of responses and meet a minimum overall rating to qualify.
