Used vehicles continued to drive Cyprus’ motor market in the first eight months of 2026, while new vehicle registrations remained below last year’s level, according to data from the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat).
Used Vehicles Extend Their Lead
A total of 38,564 motor vehicles were registered between January and August, up 11.2% from 34,668 in the same period of 2025. Used vehicle registrations rose 22.7% to 23,923 from 19,504, while new registrations fell 3.4% to 14,641 from 15,164.

The trend continued in August, when overall registrations increased 8.9% to 3,777. New registrations rose 1.4% to 1,124, while used vehicles climbed 12.4% to 2,653.
Passenger Cars Remain The Core Of The Market
Passenger saloon cars accounted for most registrations, rising 10.9% to 29,902 in the first eight months from 26,961 a year earlier. New cars made up 9,326 registrations, or 31.2%, while used cars accounted for 20,576, or 68.8%.
August passenger car registrations increased 9.2% to 3,061 from 2,803 a year earlier. Rental car registrations moved in the opposite direction, falling 14.2% to 3,468 from 4,044.
Hybrids Gain Ground
Hybrid vehicles increased their share of passenger car registrations to 52.4%, from 43.6% a year earlier. Petrol-powered cars fell to 35.3% from 43.2%, while diesel vehicles declined to 8% from 8.5%.
Electric cars also lost ground, accounting for 4.3% of passenger car registrations compared with 4.8% in the first eight months of 2025.
Commercial Vehicles And Two-Wheelers Show Mixed Trends
Motor coach and bus registrations rose 40.6% to 142 from 101 a year earlier, while August registrations remained unchanged at 12. Goods vehicle registrations increased 13.4% to 4,463 from 3,935.
Light goods vehicles rose 12.2% to 3,535, heavy goods vehicles increased 17% to 536, and road tractors climbed 21% to 167.
Rental goods vehicles also grew 20.3% to 225, while August goods vehicle registrations rose 19% to 389. Mopeds under 50cc recorded a sharp decline, falling 33.5% to 103 from 155. August registrations dropped 75% to three.
Mechanised cycles above 50cc increased 10.8% to 3,428, although August registrations fell 9.4% to 261. Tractor registrations rose 6.8% to 220, including a 46.7% increase in August to 22.
Registrations of other vehicles, including road rollers, mobile cranes and specialised vehicles, rose 41.7% to 306 in the first eight months. August registrations in the category increased 163.6%.
