Golden hour, the period shortly after sunrise and before sunset, offers photographers soft, warm light that can transform a landscape. But the quality of that light varies considerably depending on geography, weather, cloud cover and light pollution.
To identify the best places to capture it, travel company Kuoni partnered with meteorologist Jim Dale of British Weather Services to rank 165 destinations worldwide. The analysis considered cloud cover, rainfall, wind speed, artificial brightness, light pollution and average sunset duration, with 20 locations making the final ranking.

Greece And Namibia Feature Prominently
Greece had the most entries, with four destinations in the top 20, followed by Namibia with three. The United States, Australia and Botswana each secured two places.
“There’s something about that soft, warm light of golden hour that makes a destination feel truly unforgettable, whether you’re watching the sun dip below the Acropolis in Lindos or over the dunes of the Namib Desert,” said Marco Rocha, product, commercial and operations director at Kuoni.
He added that the strongest locations are not always the most obvious, with clear skies, low light pollution and local knowledge often mattering more than a destination’s reputation.
The Top Five Destinations
Jordan’s Wadi Rum claimed first place, benefiting from minimal cloud cover and virtually no rainfall. Namibia’s Sossusvlei ranked second, with its desert landscape free from light pollution and an average sunset duration of 27.9 minutes.
Namibia secured another strong result with Damaraland in third place and Etosha National Park in sixth. Chile’s Atacama Desert ranked fourth, offering dramatic scenery and wildlife including flamingos, alpacas and Andean foxes. Oman’s Wahiba Sands completed the top five.
Cyprus And Greece Lead Europe’s Entries
Lindos Acropolis on the Greek island of Rhodes was Europe’s highest-ranked location, taking 10th place. Situated 116 metres above sea level, it offers elevated views for golden hour photography on most evenings, according to Kuoni.
Cyprus also featured, with Paphos City Centre ranking 16th. Other European entries included Rhodes Town in 17th place, Cape Sounion near Athens in 19th and Navagio Shipwreck Beach on Zante in 20th.
