What challenges have you faced as a woman in tech?
Undoubtedly, gender bias permeates across all industries. Having left my home village of Visaginas in Lithuania at 17, I’ve had the “privilege” of experiencing it firsthand – from my initial job in the hospitality industry in Cyprus to my subsequent role in Finance and later in the gaming world, where women in leadership positions are often considered unconventional. It’s important to note that gender bias is also global.
This became even more evident during my tenure as a Product Director, first in Seattle, leading a team of 200 male tech enthusiasts, and later in Graz, Austria, managing a similar team. While there’s a glimmer of hope with the gradual shift towards inclusivity in the tech landscape, there’s still a considerable journey ahead so that a woman’s technical abilities are not underestimated or misconstrued simply because of gender.
What advice would you give to other women interested in a tech career?
Navigating a career in tech as a woman can be both exhilarating and challenging. Here’s a structured approach to make your journey smoother:
- Confidence in Your Abilities: Believe in yourself. Your unique perspective and skill set are invaluable in tech.
- Seeking Mentorship: Connect with mentors who have walked the path before you. They offer guidance, wisdom, and a clearer perspective on the tech landscape.
- Staying Curious: The tech world is ever-evolving. Keep yourself updated with the latest trends and innovations to stay ahead.
- Showcasing Skills: Build a strong portfolio. It’s an effective way to demonstrate your expertise and practical experience, showcasing what you bring.
- Challenging Stereotypes: Stereotypes exist, but don’t let them define you. Prove your capabilities and rise above them.
- Networking is Key: Attend tech events. These gatherings are ripe with opportunities for collaboration and building valuable relationships.
- Self-Advocacy: Speak up for your ideas, rights, and contributions. If you don’t advocate for yourself, no one else will.
- Mentoring Others: Once you’re established, mentor other women. It’s important to contribute to the making of a more inclusive tech industry.
Persist with determination, put in the effort, smile, and never surrender! Obstacles and closed doors, in most cases, pave the way for fresh starts and achievements. Only a structured approach and belief will make a difference.
What are your thoughts on the future of women in tech?
Even though gender bias is still a problem, the future of women in tech looks incredibly promising, marked by a growing trend of more women not just joining the industry but ascending to leadership positions. This shift brings diverse perspectives to the forefront, fueling innovation and enabling us to tackle global challenges with renewed insight. The rise of female role models in tech is not only inspiring but also instrumental in laying the foundation for future generations. With these ongoing changes, I’m confident that women will be at the heart of the tech world, steering us towards an inclusive, dynamic, and progressive industry. This is the future we’re all striving for – a tech landscape where women’s contributions are central and pivotal.

When asked about my driving passion, it’s clear: I’m fervently dedicated to igniting innovation and championing positive change. Settling for the status quo isn’t my nature; I’m constantly seeking ways to make a substantial and tangible impact in various fields. It’s all about enhancing and improving things, leaving them better than how I found them. And, of course, always pass on your experience to others and make a difference so that the next generations can live in a better world. This pursuit of innovation and betterment truly energizes and motivates my endeavors.
