In this interview, we explore how HackTech has become a catalyst for Cyprus’ tech ecosystem, the role of collaboration, and what participants and investors can expect from this dynamic event. Join us as Konstantin Kuznetsov reflects on HackTech’s journey and what lies ahead for both the hackathon and the future of innovation at AdTech Holding.

A way to foster innovation

What inspired AdTech Holding to launch the HackTech Hackathon three years ago, and how has it evolved since then?

First and foremost, of course, is the coincidence of the company’s management mindsets. We’ve had numerous internal hackathons within the company and decided to scale and contribute to the Cyprus IT community, which lacks these events. AdTech Holding was inspired to launch HackTech to foster innovation and bring together the brightest minds in technology to tackle real-world challenges. Over the past three years, HackTech has evolved into the largest open hackathon in Cyprus, attracting participants from more than 10 countries. It’s become a platform where creativity meets technology, and where ideas can quickly turn into impactful solutions.

This year’s hackathon focuses on IT solutions for life improvement in Cyprus and self-improvement. How were these themes chosen, and why are they important right now?

No rocket science here. It is enough to look around, and the problems requiring solutions will become obvious. We decided right from the start that at our hackathon, participants would solve real problems that ordinary people face every day and not focus on some narrow technological topics, even the hottest ones: AI, crypto and other technologies that are of no value in isolation from the public benefit. The themes of life improvement in Cyprus and self-improvement were chosen because we believe technology should not only advance industries but also enrich our lives. In today’s world, where the balance between personal and professional life is more critical than ever, these themes resonate deeply. We wanted to encourage participants to think about how technology can enhance both the community and individual well-being.

Strengthening the entire ecosystem

How do you see the hackathon contributing to the broader tech ecosystem in Cyprus?

The most important thing that the hackathon leaves to all participants, regardless of the outcome, is new experiences and connections. These are two critical components for launching any projects in the future. Also, new connections strengthen the ecosystem and the experience of the participants, by growing, increases the value of the Cypriot IT community in the eyes of Europe and the world. HackTech plays a pivotal role in the Cypriot tech ecosystem by creating a space where innovation thrives. It brings together developers, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders, creating synergies that lead to the growth of new startups and the advancement of existing ones. The hackathon acts as a catalyst for tech-driven solutions that address local challenges, thereby strengthening the entire ecosystem. I believe in the technological potential of Cyprus, and the thirst of the professionals living and working here for great achievements, and I am sure that in the foreseeable future, Cyprus will occupy one of the central places on the IT map of Europe.

The event has grown into the largest open hackathon in Cyprus. What sets HackTech apart from other hackathons?

What sets HackTech apart is its open and inclusive nature. We welcome participants from all walks of life — whether you’re a seasoned developer, a creative product designer, a student or just someone with a great idea. The collaborative spirit, coupled with the focus on real-world impact, ensures that HackTech projects are not only innovative but also practical and meaningful. In addition, I will once again draw attention to the tasks that the participants will solve — it’s about people’s lives, real challenges, and improving the island. Our difference can be formulated even more simply: if you have an idea how to make life here or globally better — come to us; we have no requirements for form, we value only content! We also try to celebrate as many works as possible. There are not 1-3 winners in our hackathon, but 7!

AdTech Holding's HackTech Hackathon

What kind of support can the winners expect from AdTech Holding and other sponsors beyond the hackathon?

Beyond the hackathon, winners receive ongoing support from AdTech Holding and our sponsors. During the hackathon, this includes mentorship, access to resources, and connections to a network of industry experts and potential investors. After the event, we provide media support that highlights projects and their founders within the community and potential investors. Our goal is to help participants turn their innovative ideas into sustainable, successful ventures.

The hackathon invites a wide range of participants, from developers to product designers. How do you ensure collaboration between different roles to create well-rounded projects?

Collaboration is at the heart of HackTech. We designed the event to encourage cross-disciplinary teamwork by providing tools, resources, and guidance that facilitate communication and idea exchange. Workshops and networking sessions are also integral, ensuring that participants from different roles can collaborate effectively and leverage each other’s strengths. In addition, mentors play an important role. In our understanding, these are wise professionals who know how to make a product and know how to manage, or rather, guide diverse teams with irrepressible energy.

Can you give us an example of a standout project from previous hackathons that had a meaningful impact or further development?

One standout project from a previous HackTech was a smart city initiative that used IoT technology to improve waste management in urban areas. The team developed a solution that optimizes waste collection routes, significantly reducing environmental impact and operational costs. This project has since been further developed and is now being piloted in several municipalities across Cyprus. Also, one of the standout projects tackled the challenge of streamlining school enrolment by simplifying the application process for parents. There were also some clever, yet practical ideas, such as an app for locating refill stations for reusable water bottles and a tool for comparing product prices across different stores.

Delivering value

Alex Vasekin, CEO of AdTech Holding, mentioned the global reach of HackTech. What plans do you have for expanding HackTech beyond Cyprus in the future?

Expanding HackTech beyond Cyprus is a natural next step as we continue to grow. We already embraced participants from Greece, UAE, Serbia, Ukraine, Israel, Belarus, Armenia, Latvia, Russia, Iran, and Finland. We’re exploring partnerships and collaborations with international tech hubs to bring HackTech to a global audience. The goal is to create a worldwide network of innovators who can collaborate across borders, addressing challenges that resonate on both local and global scales. Also, this year we are starting to cooperate with international media outlets that talk about startups and related infrastructure, which to a certain extent is also an investment in the global development of our hackathon.

As Chief Product Officer, what are your goals for the upcoming years in terms of product development and innovation at AdTech Holding?

My goal is to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in Adtech and Martech. We’re focused on developing products that are not only innovative but also user-centric, creating seamless experiences that drive engagement and deliver real value. We’re also exploring new technologies to stay ahead of the curve and set new standards in the industry.

How do you see the role of investors and potential collaborators attending HackTech, and what opportunities do you think they’ll be looking for?

It’s going to be hard for me to surprise you here. Investors and collaborators attending HackTech are looking for the next big thing — ideas that are innovative, scalable, and have the potential to disrupt industries. They’re not just looking for finished products but for passionate teams and visionary concepts that they can support and help bring to market. HackTech provides a unique opportunity and a platform where these forward-thinking individuals receive mentoring, media support and connection with investors and the startup community. …And a chance to win, for sure!

What advice would you give to first-time hackathon participants?

My advice to first-time participants is to embrace the experience fully. Don’t be afraid to share your ideas, ask questions, and learn from others. Hackathons are intense, but they’re also incredibly rewarding. Focus on collaboration, stay open-minded, and most importantly, enjoy the process of creating something new. Of course, it is equally important to make sure that the presentation of the idea is at the right level. To be honest, a clear and focused presentation is somewhat of a shortcut to the hearts of potential investors.

And what is your message for this year’s HackTech Hackathon?

My message for this year’s HackTech Hackathon is to think big, think global, be bold, and don’t be afraid to take risks. This is your chance to create something extraordinary that can have a real impact on people’s lives. Embrace the challenge, collaborate with others, and most importantly, have fun. The future is what we make of it — let’s make it something amazing.
