The Ministry of Finance announced plans to “modernise” its communication methods by phasing out fax machines.

Effective mid-June, telephone lines dedicated to fax communication will be discontinued.

“As part of modernising the Ministry of Finance’s working methods and communication, the use of fax machines will soon be discontinued, and they will be replaced by other forms of communication such as email,” the Ministry said in a post on X.

The European Chips Act is on track to help attract more than 100 billion euros ($108.41 billion) worth of private investment to the European semiconductor industry by 2030, a European Commission official said on Wednesday.

Thomas Skordas was speaking at a conference in Antwerp about the future of the initiative, which is Europe’s answer to similar programmes in the United States and Japan and to China’s support for its domestic computer chip makers.

The European Chips Act has led to “promises for investments of the order of 100 billion euros to expand the manufacturing capacity within the EU by 2030”, Skordas said.

The European Union Chips Act, billed as offering funding of 43 billion euros, relies heavily on individual governments with the Commission so far approving very little actual funding.

However, firms including Intel INTC.O and TSMC 2330.TW have announced plans to build plants in Germany at a cost of more than 30 billion euros this year.

Skordas, an official at the Commission’s digital unit, said the commission expects to finalise funding for R&D pilot lines in four sub-sectors of the chip industry by September, including a 2.5 billion euro grant for developing extremely advanced chips in Europe.

Skordas said unspecified funding for another pilot line to develop photonics, or chips that use light instead of electricity, is still in the works.

The Commission is also arranging funding for a European design platform to give companies, academics and startups access to the software tools needed to design their own chips. Most advanced chipmakers design chips but leave the manufacturing to specialists such as TSMC, Samsung 005930.KS or Intel.

“In July, we expect to open the call for the consortium that will be responsible for designing and developing this platform at the European level,” Skordas said.

At the initiative of the Cyprus Bar Association, plans are underway to create a Special Arbitration Court dedicated to economic disputes. This initiative aims to significantly enhance both the judicial and economic landscape in Cyprus.

The proposal, which needs approval from the Ministry of Justice, the Council of Ministers, and the House of Representatives, will be officially implemented upon passing these stages. Michalis Vorkas, President of the Cyprus Bar Association, stated that the objective is to establish Cyprus as a regional centre for resolving economic disputes of any scale, without restrictions. This court will cater to foreign nationals with permanent residences in Cyprus or abroad, as well as Cypriots involved in financial disputes.

Mr. Vorkas emphasized that disputes will be resolved swiftly, conserving valuable court time. The arbitrators, chosen by the Cyprus Bar Association, will be specialized legal professionals from both Cyprus and abroad.

Economically, Cyprus stands to benefit as foreign nationals opting for the Special Arbitration Court will contribute foreign exchange and significant financial inflows.

The final decisions of the Special Arbitration Court will be recorded in the District Courts, thereby gaining full judicial authority.

Functionally, the Arbitration Court will resemble the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, an international semi-judicial body established to resolve sports-related disputes.

A new call for proposals with a total budget of €900,000 has been announced by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) in collaboration with the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA).

As stated in a RIF press release, the call provides an opportunity for Cypriot enterprises and research organisations to collaborate with companies from Israel to jointly develop innovative solutions in the fields of digital technologies, advanced materials, agri-food, marine and maritime systems, renewable energy, space technologies, health and environment.

Chief Scientist of the Republic of Cyprus for Research, Innovation and Technology, Demetris Skourides has held a meeting with Dr. Alexandra Lockwood, NASA James Webb Space Telescope Scientist, in  Cyprus at the invitation of the United States Embassy in Nicosia.

During their meeting, which took place on 21 May, Skourides presented the work of the Research and Innovation ecosystem of Cyprus, while making special reference to the 2022 – 2027 Space Strategy of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy.

He underlined that Cyprus’ geographical position favors the further development of the ecosystem in the space sector, which currently consists of about 50 unique entities, including 33 companies with research activities in robotics, earth observation and navigation systems.

Dr. Lockwood informed the Chief Scientist on the capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope and the features it offers to humanity, enhancing the ecosystem. She also said that NASA is investing in Artificial Intelligence, creating the position of Chief AI Officer to lead efforts in the field.

Skourides referred to the important role of artificial intelligence in the search for exoplanets and gravitational waves since the process can be significantly simplified with the use of new technologies.
