Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy honoured her “bold and inventive oeuvre” for creating new forms of contemporary literature through a playful dialogue with the classical tradition.
A Distinctive Voice In Contemporary Literature
At 76, Carson is regarded as one of the most original writers of her generation. Her work moves between poetry and prose, combining ancient mythology, modern life and classical scholarship in ways that challenge conventional literary categories.

The Academy highlighted the tension between “the philologist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire for new meaning” in Carson’s work. She has described etymology as a starting point for her writing, bringing together academic research and creative experimentation.
Works That Redefined Literary Form
Carson’s best-known books reflect that hybrid approach. Her 1986 debut, Eros the Bittersweet, explored desire through ancient Greek literature, while Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse (1998) reimagined a Greek myth as a queer coming-of-age story, blending poetry, fiction and criticism.
She continued to challenge traditional forms with The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos (2001) and Norma Jeane Baker of Troy (2019), which drew parallels between Marilyn Monroe and Helen of Troy. Her most recent book, Wrong Norma, was published in 2024.
Carson Becomes 19th Woman To Win Literature Nobel
Carson is the 19th woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Recent female laureates include Han Kang in 2024, Annie Ernaux in 2022 and Louise Glück in 2020.
The literature prize has been awarded 119 times since its creation, with 123 laureates overall, including four prizes shared by multiple winners.
Part Of A Busy Nobel Week
Carson’s award is the fourth Nobel announced this week, following the prizes in medicine, physics and chemistry. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, followed by the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel on Monday.
Each 2026 Nobel Prize carries 12 million Swedish kronor, or about €1.07 million, along with an 18-carat gold medal and diploma. The formal award ceremonies will take place on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896.
